How to Get from Nairobi to Malindi: Flights, SGR and Bus

Malindi is on Kenya's north coast, roughly 600 km from Nairobi by road. There are three practical ways to get there.

1. Fly Nairobi to Malindi

The fastest option. Direct flights take about an hour and land at Malindi International Airport, a short drive from town. Airlines on the route have included Jambojet and Safarilink, with departures from both Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport. Schedules and fares change through the year, so check current options before you book.

From the airport, a private transfer gets you to a Malindi hotel in minutes, or to Watamu in about half an hour.

2. SGR train to Mombasa, then road to Malindi

Take the Madaraka Express from Nairobi to the Mombasa terminus, then continue by road up the coast via Kilifi. The road leg is about 120 km and usually takes two to three hours, depending on traffic around Mombasa.

3. Bus from Nairobi to Malindi

Several bus companies run day and overnight services from Nairobi to Malindi. It is the cheapest option and the longest, usually a full day or night on the road.

Which option to choose

For a short break, fly. For a mid-budget trip with luggage, the SGR plus a booked transfer is comfortable and predictable. The bus suits travellers with time and a tight budget.
